Weatherproof Your Wedding Day

After many years of photographing blushing brides-to-be and handsome grooms here in Birmingham, I’ve witnessed countless wedding days. I know that even here in the balmy Southern weather, things can be wildly unpredictable and it’s important to have a plan. Obviously, your wedding photos play a huge role in your day, and it’s my goal to ensure that everything goes smoothly so you can have beautiful memories. Here are some of the most practical tips and tricks to plan for whatever Mother Nature may throw your way: 

Stay informed: It’s important to check the weather forecast often in the days leading up to your wedding. Although things can change on a dime, you can look at past weather patterns over the years to get a general idea of what to expect. This information is useful when you are choosing a ceremony and reception venue, and can help you stay up-to-date. You can even have a bridesmaid or other delegated person be in charge of weather updates or major changes, so that you don’t have to worry about it. 

Have a backup plan: When it comes to outdoor weddings, having a plan is crucial. Whether it’s renting an outdoor tent, having an indoor space prepped in case, or having umbrellas on hand, a contingency plan is really important. Your wedding planner can be a helpful point person, and so can your venue. If you have a point person at your venue, ask plenty of questions about what their processes and procedures are in the event of inclement weather. Their past experiences can help you shape a practical and doable plan. Make sure that your planner and the venue are on the same page as well, so that everything can go seamlessly. 

Embrace the elements if needed: We know that things happen and sometimes, the weather will surprise us. I have worked with drizzly rain and inclement weather plenty of times, and have even used them to my advantage. Cloudy skies can offer a soft, diffused look and light rain showers can add a romantic touch. Trust me to capture beautiful moments despite the weather, and know that my experience and expertise come into play. Nothing catches me off guard after my many years of wedding photography, and I am well-equipped to handle whatever happens. My goal is to inspire confidence in you and make sure you don’t have to worry about a thing. 

Consider your wedding attire and the possible weather: When you are choosing attire for your wedding party, be mindful of what the weather might be. For your bridesmaids, look for lightweight and breathable fabrics during the summer months here in the south, and consider adding some layers (like a light, pretty shawl) in the cooler temperatures and for winter weddings. For groomsmen, something a little lighter like a vest and tie might be more appropriate than a full tuxedo during the hottest months of the year. If rain seems unavoidable, invest in plenty of clear umbrellas and rainboots at a discount store, to help keep you and your wedding party dry. Keep all your receipts and tags in case the forecast changes and you don’t need them after all! 

Communication is key: While it’s natural to want everything to go according to plan and be perfect, sometimes Mother Nature has other ideas. With strong communication with all your vendors and your wedding planner, your day can be just as wonderful as you imagined. Here are some people you’ll want to be sure to coordinate plans with:

• Your cake/caterer: Ask them about their plan to transport or protect food and desserts
• Ushers or parking: Ask about who will help guests park or walk to the ceremony if rain occurs. 
• DJ and dance floor: What is their plan to cover or protect speakers and other equipment, and can they move indoors? 

While you can’t control the weather, you can definitely prepare for any circumstance. Remember that you can have a magical, dreamy wedding day, no matter what the forecast may be! The best weddings are the ones where love shines brightly, rain or shine!
