The great outdoors can be a magical place to have a wedding, especially in a city as historic and beautiful as Birmingham. I’m a veteran wedding photographer who has captured countless vows in stunning outdoor settings, and I’ve seen how enchanting these moments can be! However, outdoor ceremonies bring an unique set of challenges and considerations here in our lovely city. How do you ensure that every moment is picture-ready? Here are some of the tips I’ve learned over the years:
Choosing the right venue is key: Birmingham is home to a variety of stunning outdoor venues, from lush botanical gardens to historic estates and charming parks. When selecting your venue, consider the time of year and the typical weather patterns. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Aldridge Gardens are popular choices that offer picturesque backdrops for your big day. It’s very important to visit potential venues at the same time of day you plan to hold your ceremony to get a sense of the lighting and the potential weather. You may find it’s not quite what you’ve envisioned, depending on the time of day or season.
Consider permits and regulations: Before you solidify your planning, be sure to check in with your venue about any required permits or regulations. Some outdoor spaces that are not true venues require permits for large gatherings, amplified music, or alcohol consumption. It’s also wise to inquire about noise ordinances and curfews to ensure your celebration can go off without a hitch. Being aware of these details early on can save you from last-minute surprises, and help your day run smoothly.
Weather preparedness: As with any outdoor event, the weather can be wildly unpredictable, even here in the balmy south. A backup indoor location or a sturdy tent can save the day if the weather takes an unexpected turn. It’s also wise to prepare things like water bottles, fans, umbrellas, or blankets, to help your guests feel as comfortable as possible. We have also done a separate blog about weatherproofing your wedding, so don’t forget to check that out!
Decor and lighting: Outdoor weddings offer endless opportunities for stunning décor. Consider the natural beauty of your venue and enhance it with floral arrangements, fairy lights, and elegant seating. As your wedding photographer, capturing your special day in the best light is my top priority. Outdoor weddings offer natural beauty and light that can make your photos truly spectacular. However, it’s important to consider the timing of your ceremony. Midday sun can be harsh and create strong shadows, so planning your ceremony for early morning or late afternoon can result in softer, more flattering light. Communicate your timeline with your photographer to ensure we can capture all the key moments beautifully.
Comfort and convenience: Think about the comfort of your guests, especially if you’re having a large event. Providing adequate seating, shade, and restroom facilities is crucial. Portable restrooms can be a good option if your venue doesn’t have sufficient facilities (and don’t forget to rent the handwashing stations, as well). Additionally, consider accessibility for older guests or those with mobility issues. Small touches like insect repellent stations and hydration stations can go a long way in ensuring everyone has a pleasant experience.
Lastly, relax and enjoy your amazing day. Outdoor weddings can be unpredictable every once in awhile, but overall, the beauty of nature provides a stunning backdrop for your vows! Focus on the love of the day and the people around you, and your wedding can be everything you’ve dreamed of.
