Maggie and David: Tuscaloosa Wedding
Some weddings tell the story of a couple. Maggie and David’s wedding told the story of a place, too.
Nearly every part of their day was connected to Tuscaloosa. They met at Galette’s, built their relationship around the University of Alabama, exchanged vows at St. Francis of Assisi University Parish, and celebrated with family and friends inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. By the time the day was over, it felt less like a wedding taking place in Tuscaloosa and more like a love letter to the city that brought them together.
The day began at a sweet little home where both Maggie and David got ready surrounded by family and their closest people. With only one attendant standing beside each of them, the morning felt intimate and relaxed. There was no rushing from room to room or managing a large wedding party. Instead, everyone seemed genuinely excited to spend the day together. Maggie’s sister Anne served as Maid of Honor while her brother George stood beside David as Best Man, making family a central part of the day from the very beginning. One of the things I loved most about Maggie and David’s wedding was how many personal details were woven throughout the celebration. Their color palette reflected everything they hoped the day would feel like: bright, joyful, and full of life. Blues, pinks, greens, and yellows appeared throughout the design, creating a cheerful summer atmosphere that felt perfectly suited to their personalities. Every detail felt just like them.
Their story showed up in the smallest places, too. Guests were encouraged to take home custom Galette’s cups, a nod to the place where Maggie and David first met. It was one of those details that could easily be overlooked by someone who didn’t know the story, but for the couple it represented the beginning of everything. Those are often my favorite wedding details because they mean so much more than simply looking beautiful. Before the ceremony, Maggie and David shared a private first look. They told me beforehand that they were happy for family and friends to watch from a distance, but they wanted the actual moment to feel like their own. That balance fit them perfectly. It gave them a chance to slow down, see each other before the day unfolded, and enjoy a few quiet moments together before stepping into the excitement of the afternoon.
The ceremony took place at St. Francis of Assisi University Parish, where family and friends gathered to witness their Catholic Nuptial Mass. The church held special significance to the couple, and there was something particularly meaningful about watching them exchange vows in a place that has become such an important part of their lives. The ceremony was filled with reverence, tradition, and the kind of joy that comes when two families come together to celebrate something truly special.
Throughout the day, family history and meaningful traditions appeared again and again. Maggie carried a Claddagh ring gifted by her grandmother and a bouquet pin honoring grandparents who have passed away. At the reception, wedding photographs from both sets of parents were displayed for guests to enjoy. These weren’t simply decorations. They served as reminders of the marriages that came before theirs and the people who helped shape the lives they are building together.
One of the most meaningful details of the entire wedding was the display of one thousand folded paper cranes. Maggie shared that the cranes are part of a Japanese tradition symbolizing wishes for health, happiness, and a long life together. Seeing them incorporated into the wedding added another layer of significance to the celebration and created one of the most memorable details of the day. They were beautiful to photograph, but even more beautiful because of the meaning behind them. After the ceremony, we spent time creating portraits before heading to one of the most iconic reception venues in Alabama. Hosting a reception inside Bryant-Denny Stadium is already memorable, but for Maggie and David it carried even deeper significance. This wasn’t just a famous location. It was part of their story. They specifically wanted to recreate a photo from early in their relationship in front of the stadium, a full-circle moment that connected the beginning of their story to the day they officially became husband and wife.
As the reception began, it became clear that Maggie and David cared far more about experiences than traditions for tradition’s sake. They told me before the wedding that some of their favorite images from their parents’ wedding albums were not formal portraits but candid photographs of guests laughing, dancing, and enjoying the celebration. They wanted their own wedding documented the same way, and that vision shaped the entire evening. The focus was never on creating a perfect production. Of course, no recap of Maggie and David’s wedding would be complete without mentioning their dogs. They made sure their four-legged family members were included in the day, and some of the sweetest photographs came from those moments. Anyone who knows Maggie and David understands that their dogs are part of their family, so including them felt completely natural and perfectly fitting.
