If you know me, you know I will always get excited about the pretty details of a wedding day. Give me a beautiful invitation suite, an overflowing bouquet, gorgeous reception lighting, or a sentimental little something tucked into the day, and I am going to notice it. But after photographing weddings for years, I’ve also learned that you absolutely do not need to add more and more just because you want beautiful photos. The weddings that photograph best usually have a few, really thoughtful details that feel connected to the couple and the space they chose.

Your invitation suite is a perfect example. I love photographing invitations because they’re one of the first pieces of the wedding story, and by the time I arrive, they’ve already done a lot of work! They’ve introduced your colors and given your guests their first peek at what the day might feel like, and a little glimpse into your story. If you have vow books, a special ring box, or another meaningful piece you’d like included, have those nearby too. You don’t need to go shopping for extra things just to fill a detail photo. I would much rather work with the pieces you actually chose for your wedding and create something beautiful from those.
And then we have the flowers. I could probably write an entire post about what gorgeous florals can do for wedding photographs, because they show up everywhere without you even realizing it. Your bouquet becomes part of your bridal portraits and your photos together, while the ceremony flowers create the setting for the moment you actually get married. Later, those same flowers may appear throughout the reception. If florals are one of the things you really love, this is an area where putting your budget into a few high-impact places can go a long way. I also love when arrangements can be moved after the ceremony and enjoyed again at the reception. Beautiful and practical is always a win, and is easier on the budget, too.

One thing couples sometimes forget is that the venue is already doing a lot of the decorating for you. Alabama has some truly beautiful wedding venues, and when you choose one because you love the architecture or the property itself, you don’t have to cover every inch of it. Take a look at where you’ll actually be standing during the ceremony and think about what will be behind you in those photographs. Sometimes a gorgeous floral installation is exactly what the space needs. Other times, the view, the windows, or the architecture is already enough, and adding too much would take away from what made you fall in love with the venue in the first place.
Next, can we talk about reception lighting? Because this one is so easy to overlook, and it can change the entire look of the evening. You can choose the most beautiful linens and centerpieces in the world, but if the room becomes extremely dark once dinner begins, you lose some of that warmth and dimension you worked so hard to create. Candlelight is gorgeous. Chandeliers are gorgeous. Soft, warm lighting around a reception space is one of those things you may not think much about while you’re planning, but you will absolutely see the difference in your photographs. It also makes the room feel wonderful when your guests walk in, which is a pretty great bonus.

This is also where all those smaller choices start working together. Your linens don’t need to perfectly match your invitations, and your menus don’t have to coordinate with every flower in the room. In fact, I love when everything feels collected rather than overly matched. Maybe a soft color from your paper goods shows up again at the reception, or the romantic feel of your ceremony carries into the tables and candlelight later that evening. When there’s a little thread running through the day, I can photograph a tiny place card and then step back for a photograph of the entire room, and somehow both images feel like they belong in the same story.
But if you ask me which details matter most, I’m probably going to choose the ones that have a story attached to them. Every time. The earrings that belonged to your grandmother. Your mom helping you into a veil she wore years ago. A handwritten letter tucked away in a drawer until the wedding morning. Those are the things I want you to tell me about. I may not know that the tiny charm on your bouquet belonged to someone important unless you tell me, and once I know, I can make sure it has a place in your photographs.

So when you’re deep in Alabama wedding planning and Pinterest is convincing you that you need twelve more things for your reception tables, remember that beautiful wedding photos don’t come from filling every available space. Choose details because you love them. Let your venue be beautiful. Put your budget toward the things that will have an impact throughout the day, and bring in those personal pieces that could never belong to anyone else’s wedding. Give me those things, the people you love, and a wedding day you’re genuinely excited about, and I’ll have plenty of beautiful things to photograph.
